Can smart charging damage my battery?
No. Smart charging sends the same start and stop commands as your car's own app. It does not change the charging rate, the voltage or any battery setting beyond what your car brand allows.
The charge limit set in your car always wins. Smart charging never charges beyond it.
How cold weather affects charging
- Less usable capacity: a cold battery temporarily holds less energy. This is not permanent. Warming the battery restores it.
- Slower charging: below about 20°C, a battery cannot take full charging power. Some energy from the grid may go to heating the battery first.
- Longer time-to-full estimates: your car may show a longer charging time in cold weather. Once charging starts, the estimate usually drops a lot. Smart charging may adjust its plan because of this.
- Battery heating: below 0°C, some cars heat the battery automatically. They use grid power when plugged in, otherwise battery power. This can drain the battery noticeably.
Batteries work best above 20°C.
12V battery on Hyundai and Kia
Hyundai and Kia cars have a separate 12V battery for the support systems. Frequent data requests can drain it.
To prevent this:
- Do not leave the car plugged in for more than 2 to 3 days.
- Lock and unlock the doors now and then.
- Install the latest battery management system (BMS) software update.
